Party of Five (Sports)

I love this time of year.  The heat and humidity of a Mid-Atlantic summer are fading away and the cooler days (and even cold evenings) of Fall are upon us.  September heralded the beginning of the Fall 2009 TV season (Glee, Greek, NCIS, Big Bang Theory, the list goes on!).  This also marks the time of year when my sports-geekiness goes into overdrive.  Football and hockey are just starting, soccer and baseball are waning and the Chase is ramping up over in NASCAR-land.

To say my Tivo-recording floweth over is a massive understatement, but it also sparks some conflicts.  I’m afraid my Bears just won’t get much love unless they play Sunday or Monday night until the 2009 Sprint Cup Champion has been named.  Jimmie served notice that he’s going for his fourth in a row with a dominating win at Dover, but I think it’s gonna come down to Homestead again.  Personally, I think the fourth will be damn near impossible, but we’ll see who’s hoisting the Cup come November.

I just realized that Saturday will likely be my last DC United game of the season.  With our starting goalie out for 4-6 weeks with a busted up MCL and shoulder, plus numerous other players out with end-of-the-season injuries, I just don’t think that any sort of miracle come back is on the offing.  That said, there’s another home game – the last home game – on the 17th, but as I’ll be attending my first ever Rhinebeck, I won’t be part of the end of the year celebrations.

Then there are the Caps.  I don’t know why I’ve decided to hockey-obsess this year – was the gap in my schedule between mid-November and early February too much to bear?  I blame Holly; it's obvious her evil influence is at play.  I made it to two preseason games this year, due to generous contributions to the here-we-have-tickets-and-can’t-use-em-ENJOY! fund.  I’d like to keep that fund going as the season continues, so give til it hurts, y’all (especially you, KP, of the awesome seats behind the goal.  Sis?  Don't hide behind your monitor – I'm talkin' to you, too!)

So tonight DCU faces off against San Juan Jabloteh in CONCACAF play and tomorrow night, the Caps open on the road against Boston.   Friday, I'll cast on for Socktoberfest (a day late, and a dollar short, as always).
